Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's understandable for questions to be raised about his future after another heavy loss against PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in 12 matches, marking the club's poorest run since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received a lot of backing from above,” Slot commented.
“It would be great to change things and get a victory naturally but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He continued, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to provide details on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They assist to the team and to me and those talks happen but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the belief. But I've not talked to them since this game so far so we'll see.”
Recurring Issues and Player Response
The manager highlighted recurring shortcomings from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones stated.
“It is not good enough. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a period of this nature with performances like these.”
Jones concluded, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And until that badge is taken away, we will always battle.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
