Blast Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Eviction Procedure in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters went into the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the residence was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.
A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the interior minister said.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
