The count of Indigenous people dying while in detention in Australia has climbed to its peak point since the beginning of official data began in 1980.

Recently released figures indicate that 33 of the 113 individuals who died in custody in the 12-month period ending in June have been identified as of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. This represents an rise from 24 fatalities in the previous equivalent period.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are severely represented in the criminal justice system. They constitute more than one-third of all prisoners, even though representing under 4% of the national people.

These sobering numbers emerge over three decades after a seminal inquiry into Indigenous deaths in custody, which put forward numerous of proposed changes.

Breakdown of the Recent Statistics

Of the 33 Indigenous deaths in custody logged between last July and this June, 26 took place while in a correctional facility, which is an increase from 18 in the previous year.

One death occurred in a juvenile facility, and all except one of the individuals were male.

The remaining six fatalities happened in the custody of law enforcement, defined as when someone passes away while police are detaining them.

The main reason of Indigenous deaths was categorised as "self-harm," with "natural causes." The report noted that hanging was the cause in eight of the deaths.

Geographic Distribution

The state of New South Wales had the highest number of Indigenous deaths in prison custody with nine, followed by Western Australia with six. Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory each had three deaths.

The growing number of Indigenous deaths in custody in New South Wales is a "deeply distressing reality," the state's coroner has said.

In October, Coroner Teresa O'Sullivan emphasised that this rising trend was not "mere statistics" and that these deaths demanded "independent and careful examination, respect and responsibility."

Profile Information and Expert Reaction

The mean age of those who died was 45, and eleven of the deceased were awaiting a court sentencing.

A criminal law expert, Amanda Porter, described the figures as reflecting a "country-wide emergency" that requires "leadership and government action."

Ms. Porter, who has been present at multiple official inquiries with grieving families, said very little has changed since the 1991 national inquiry that aimed to address this issue.

"It's maddening to see the number of investigations I attend, the number funerals families have to attend, and the fact that we are 30 years after the royal commission, and the situation is getting progressively more severe," she commented.

Since the royal commission, a total of 600 First Nations people have died in custody, which includes six in youth detention, according to the report.
