Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it understood the economist's choice to depart.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the desk of the White House for approval. He has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after reversing his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Message Details
A group of financier-linked messages disclosed by the legislative panel last week included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to notable global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish confidence and repair connections with the people closest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was not affiliated with the organization.
Summers became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
