In late October 2024, the situation was completely distinct. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful Americans could acknowledge the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – yet they could still see it as the United States. A free society. A place where constitutional order meant something. A state guided by a dignified and upright official, despite his older age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the land we live in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed to build a lavish ballroom. The president is persecuting his political rivals or supposed enemies and insisting federal prosecutors hand over a huge total of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are deployed across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, renamed the War Department, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of potentially totaling nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, journalism organizations are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are regarded as aristocracy.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250^th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the brink into autocracy and fascism,” a noted author, stated recently. “Ultimately, more quickly than I imagined possible, it transpired in this country.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

Nevertheless, we know that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his deeply disturbing first term and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – following the leader directly declared plainly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him over the other candidate.

While alarming as the current reality is, it’s even scarier to recognize that we’re only several months under this leadership. Where will an additional three years of this deterioration find us? And suppose that period becomes something even longer, since there is nobody to stop this ruler from opting that another term is required, perhaps for defense purposes?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There will be midterm elections in 2026 that may establish an alternate balance of power, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There are public servants who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, for example Democratic congressmen that are initiating an inquiry concerning the try to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a national vote three years from now could start us down the road to healing exactly as the previous vote put us on this regrettable path.

There are millions of Americans marching in the streets of their cities, similar to recent last weekend during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is awakening”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid the Vietnam war protests or in the seventies crisis.

During those times, the listing ship eventually was righted.

Reich says he understands the signs of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. As support, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, cross-party resistance regarding a television host's removal and the almost universal rejection by reporters to agree to the defense department’s demands they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant always remains inactive until some venality grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of the common good, certain violence so noisy, that he is forced but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct.

At the same time, the crucial issues persist: can America ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My cynical mind indicates that the second option is true; that everything might be gone. My positive feelings, however, advises me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.

In my case, as a media critic, that means pushing media professionals to commit, more completely, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For others, it could mean participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we existed in a very different place. A year from now? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. All we can do is try to not give up.
