In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
• An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Despite recording often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a game-ending two-base hit that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the United States, he blasted a game-tying shot in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
