Venus Williams, Awarded Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Half a Decade.
Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
